Workshop Description
Day 1
A one-hour presentation using a variety of pastel paintings to show the finer points of the elements of design and composition.
Participants will engage in exercises using Pan Pastels, NuPastels, or other semi-hard pastels to create specific shapes in a square paper format. Each exercise builds on the last one; working on composition using shapes, values, and shadows.
Day 2
Participants will transfer their favorite design from Day 1 onto a piece of sanded pastel paper using a nupastel to block in the big shapes of their design. We will then use soft pastel to apply color in layers over our value design "skeleton" to create a pastel painting. Karen will demo this.
If time permits, we will review what we have created with constructive critique.
SUPPLY LIST
If you plan to use a hard copy photo you will need frame corners using cardboard or a mat cut at corners (directions will follow upon sign up). Photos from device are acceptable.
• Several photographs if printed please use 8x10 photo glossy photo paper in grey scale (landscapes and groups of objects/flowers/people work best)
• Inexpensive paper for skill building exercises (newsprint or printer paper)
• Nu pastels in assorted values and colors an array of soft pastels
• About 4 pieces of sanded pastel paper no bigger than 11x14
• Paper towels, easel, board to tape onto, artist tape
• Artist's preference for underpainting: Hard pastels and rubbing alcohol OR watercolor paint w brush OR vine charcoal for underpainting

ABOUT KAREN
Karen Israel's pastel paintings are defined by their dynamic compositions and unique viewpoints.
Karen is an experienced teacher in pastel technique and the principles of art and she enjoys seeing the enormous progress made by her students. Over the years, Her work has won numerous awards in national and international juried exhibits, dating back to 2011.
In 2019, Karen's work won Best in Show at the Pastel Society of the West Coast's National exhibit and the Flora Giffuni Memorial Award with the American Artist's Professional League.
